Wupatki-Sunset Crater Scenic Loop Road

Seal those Cracks!

Addressing preventive maintenance and repairs on roads and asphalt may not be the most fascinating work at the monuments; however, it is some of the most critical work that supports visitor access.

This year the facilities team is performing crack-seal work on approximately 15 miles of the 35-mile main thoroughfare between Wupatki and Sunset Crater, the Scenic Loop Road, also known as Forest Road 545.

Crack-seal is a preservation treatment for the road, extends the life of the asphalt, and slows the process of deterioration until a replacement is required.
