Movin’ in the Monuments

Tentative due to COVID

The highly successful program, Movin’ in the Monuments, promotes healthy lifestyles for youth and their families in the Flagstaff area. Using the backdrop of all three Flagstaff Area National Monuments, this program creates connections and opportunities for outdoor recreation that contribute to families’ and youths’ physical, mental, and social well-being. Examples of events include facilitating community yoga events, leading poetry workshops to creatively capture participants’ direct experiences in the Monuments, and enhancing the Roving Rangers NPS/USFS partnership to target underserved communities.

Movin’ in the Monuments has increased outreach to historically underserved Sunnyside and Southside Flagstaff communities. This program thus far has reached almost 500 people including 325 children with 20 different events. Collaborators with the national monuments are the Friends of Flagstaff National Monuments, the Flagstaff Unified School District, the National Park Foundation, and the Coconino National Forest.

The initial funding source provided by the National Park Foundation is no longer available. To continue this program, we will require a new, non-federal funding source to be used primarily for transportation, provide healthy snacks for participants, and provide capacity to champion these activities.

Due to COVID-19 related closures, one of the park’s non-profit partners, Western National Parks and Monuments Association (WNPA) has seen a catastrophic decline in their revenue. WNPA is responsible for operating the three educational park stores, located in each visitor center. Until WNPA can financially recover (the current projection is approximately two years after the pandemic ends), the Friends hope to fill that void and keep this vital program funded.
