Monument Internship Program

The National Park Service (NPS) and Northern Arizona University (NAU) have entered into a win-win partnership, providing valuable hands-on experience for students, while assisting the NPS in basic operations, particularly in visitor services. This program is likely to in include Coconino Community College in the near future.

In return for 240 hours of interning, students receive a monetary stipend from the NPS to cover their travel and related costs. In many cases, the internship satisfies a practicum requirement from NAU. Here is what two recent interns had to say regarding their experience:

“My VIP experience at Walnut Canyon NM could not have been more positive…In my time at WACA, I acquired more knowledge than I had in my two years of college courses at the time. Interning with the NPS within the Flagstaff Area National Monuments will provide learning experiences about the wilderness, interpretation, customer service skills, a passion for the mission of the park service, and a whole spectrum of other positive outcomes.”

Matthew M.

“I was very fortunate to get a volunteer position as an Intern at Wupatki National Monument this fall. I am a student at Northern Arizona University perusing a degree in Environmental Studies…. Learning about the indigenous history of the park was very fulfilling and it corresponded with the course “Indigenous People of the Southwest”, which I took this semester…During my internship, I learned the necessary skills to act as an interpretation ranger and deliver people information.”

Natasha S.

Due to COVID-19 related closures, one of the park’s non-profit partners, Western National Parks and Monuments Association (WNPA) has seen a catastrophic decline in their revenue. WNPA is responsible for operating the three educational park stores, located in each visitor center. Until WNPA can financially recover (the current projection is approximately two years after the pandemic ends), the Friends hope to fill that void and keep this vital program funded.
