Walking down the 240 steps on the Island Trail at Walnut Canyon National Monument isn’t usually a problem for visitors, it’s the walk back up! With the advent of a computer-generated 3D module of the 9-room site, the most intact, everyone will be able to visit the site.
A new project called the Southwest Virtual Museum, comprised of a partnership between NAU archaeologists and the National Parks Service (NPS), won’t be complete until mid-2024, but there is already much fascinating material to view.
The Southwest Virtual Museum began in 2019 and continues to expand its virtual collection which will include pottery, projectile points, textiles, rocks and minerals and so much more. The images of artifacts are truly spectacular.
